Andropause and Urology

Why is it important to make sure Men
maintain proper hormone levels of Testosterone?

Furthermore what role does
Testosterone play in the health of a male?

To answer those questions lets look at what a study concluded that reviewed all the world studies completed from 1988 through 2004 on low Testosterone and its role in metabolic syndrome:

“Hypogonadism (low testosterone) is likely a fundamental component of metabolic syndrome. Testosterone therapy may not only treat hypogonadism, but may also have tremendous potential to slow or halt the progression from metabolic syndrome to overt diabetes or cardiovascular disease via beneficial effects on insulin regulation, lipid profile, and blood pressure. Furthermore, the use of testosterone to treat metabolic syndrome may also lead to the prevention of urological complications commonly associated with these chronic disease states, such as neurogenic bladder and erectile dysfunction.”

(Hypogonadism and Metabolic Syndrome: Implications for Testosterone Therapy-2005, Journal of Urology)

In other words diabetes, heart disease, neurogenic bladder, and erectile dysfunction, are increased in men with low testosterone, which eventually can lead to DEATH.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

If a male patient has 3 or more of the following:
Abdominal obesity measured by waist circumference of greater than 40 inches
Fasting plasma triglycerides of greater than 150 mg/dl
Fasting HDL less than 40 mg/dl
Fasting blood glucose greater than 110 mg/dl
Blood pressure greater than 130/85

What are some other symptoms of low testosterone?
Cognitive decline, poor memory, and focus
Apathy and/or depression
Irritability
Loss of sexual enjoyment
Weight gain (waistline)
Insomnia
Inability to make clear decision
Poor recovery from injury or illness

So what can be done?

By answering a few questions on the ADAM questionnaire you can determine if you are having symptoms of low testosterone and whether you should be further evaluated by a physician. If necessary, early treatment can have a huge impact on your quality of life.
