Working closely with your physician and compounding pharmacist, together we can find a medication that works for your specific need. You may have heard of or experienced diaper rash, sunburn, insect bites, poison ivy, skin disorders, ear infection, acne, cold sores, canker sores, decubitis ulcers, dry skin, alopecia, psoriasis, eczema, shingles, hand or nail fungus or the process of aging. Compounding can be beneficial to patients in a variety of ways.

Skin, the largest organ in the body, keeps us from falling apart.  What would we do with out it?  What would we do with it?  It assists in regulating our body temperature and blood pressure.  It also serves as a barrier to damage form radiation, physical action, chemical agents and microorganisms.  The health of our skin is determined largely by what we eat.

It is estimated that five percent of the population suffers from a chronic skin, hair or nail disorder.  Many others encounter acute or seasonal conditions.  Dermatological compounding is used for the purpose of treating a local or systemic effect.

Dermatologicals have three primary functions: 1) protect injured areas from the environment and permit rejuvenation of the skin 2) provide for skin hydration or an emollient effect and 3) provide a means of conveying a medication to the skin for a specific effect.

Dosage Forms:
A chosen form of dosage is used to assure patient compliance. From newborn to seniors, there are various ways to prepare the medication such as: transdermal gels, topical creams, lotions, lip balms, pacifier dosages, suspensions, suppositories, lollipops, gummy bears, mouth wash, lozenges and syrups.

Strength:
Every patient is unique and a one size fits all may not always work. Some individuals have allergies or varying drug tolerances, which can make it difficult in some instances to find a medication that is suitable. When you work with your physician and pharmacist, a compounded medication can be made specific to your needs.
